Noble Prentis Commission Update

I am very close to finishing the piece for James Levy and the Noble Prentiss 5th grade choir. It has really begun to fall into place and is sounding marvelous. I have included a sample of the first verse draft below. Unfortunately, I am not sure I’ll be able to make it to the premiere, but I know the students will do well with it!

Noble Prentis Commission

I have recently been commissioned to write a piece for James Levy and the 5th grade choir at Noble Prentiss Elementary in Kansas City, Kansas! The purpose of this project is to honor a Noble Prentis student who is bravely fighting a battle with brain cancer. The text for this piece, “If I Could”, a new poem by my colleague Patricia Hamilton. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Patricia on this project, and I am pleased with how the piece is coming together! I’ve been touched by the faith of this student and hope that “If I Could” brings him joy and encouragement. Keep fighting, Santos!

The Union University Singers again performed “Thou Shalt Love the Lord” last night at their annual Fall Choral Concert (1st Baptist Church, Jackson, TN) and did a fine job! I made a short video of the performance and have posted it on YouTube. Enjoy!

Celebrating 400 Years of the KJV

This year marks the 400th Anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible. At the end of last semester, Dr. Chris Mathews, Director of the Union University Singers, asked me to write a choral piece for the occasion. The text I settled on is in Deuteronomy 6 & 7 where Moses relays God’s command to “Love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” I have just wrapped it up and am looking forward to hearing it in September! “Thou Shalt Love the Lord” will be premiered as the opening piece at Union’s festival, “KJV 400: Legacy and Impact.”

Front Range Performance in CA

I have recently received word that “Front Range” (Band version) will be programmed by the California State University Band (Bakersfield) under the baton of Doug Davis on March 17, 2012. I am looking forward to the performance! As far as I know, this will be the premiere of the band version.

“1,200 Miles to Santa Fe” Premiere tonight

The Santa Fe Trial School District High School band will be premiering “1,200 Miles to Santa Fe” this evening during the Washburn University (Topeka, KS) University Band concert at 7pm in White Concert Hall. Lance Quilling and the students have been working tremendously hard on this piece and are playing very well! I will hopefully be able to post some pictures and video soon.
